Less is More
When social media first started out, it was centered around the core mission of connecting people. And part of that mission was making it easy to see and share updates from friends and family. Over the years, social media companies have taken away much of the intimacy and authenticity of close connections, resulting in the prioritization of content from people that you don’t even know, mixed in with endless ads. To be fair, this has resulted in some very entertaining content and memes, but at the same time these platforms are no longer delivering on the promise of connecting people.
We believe it’s time for a new era of social media to begin, where privacy is the standard, and connecting you with people you actually know is the core mission. In this era, less is more: closer connections, no distracting ads, and no algorithmic content leading you down endless rabbit holes.
The concept of less is more is best embodied in our implementation of private spaces. Spaces allow you to create invite-only groups centered around family and friends, so you can easily connect and get updates from the most important people in your life. This means no trolls and no “you may also like” content will ever find its way into your spaces. Within a space, our video centric experience makes it easy to follow the action of sports and activities, watch babies take their first journeys, or relive memorable moments from a wedding.
Less is more applies to status symbols as well. We do not display vanity metrics such as the number of views or number of likes on your videos. We want you to feel good about sharing authentic moments, and not worry about how many people love what you are posting. Reelspace is not about sharing for the purpose of building your influence or cultivating your image for a particular audience. You already have TikTok and Instagram for that.
Another facet of less is more is keeping less clutter on your device. Your videos are securely stored in our cloud, and disappear after 30 days unless you add them to your Memories collection. I take tons of videos of my kids at gymnastics and soccer, and let’s just say that not every video is a keepsake. I share them with my wife and the grandparents, but most of them are just quick updates to keep everyone in the loop. When we catch a spectacular moment though, it’s easy to save it as a memory.
Reelspace is available on the Apple App Store.
